Three Best Picnic Spots in West Des Moines!

By Nicole L. July 22, 2019

My kids love the idea of going on a picnic, so we pack up what seems like half of our refrigerator a few times a year and head out to one of our favorite West Des Moines picnic spots.

We’re lucky, in West Des Moines, to have so many great picnic spots to choose from! Here’s my family’s list of top three picnic spots in WDM:

Location: LEGION PARK, 01 Vine St, West Des Moines, IA 50265

Features: Play structures, shelter area and of course the splash pad!

What my kids love: My kids love running back and forth between the splash pad area and the play equipment. They enjoy how there's a "bigger" kid play area and a "smaller" kid play area.

What I love: I love that this park has the restroom close to the splash pad in case nature calls or if I need to change my children out of their wet suits. There's also plenty of picnic tables to eat at or what we love to do is bring a blanket to enjoy our lunch/snacks!

Location: WILD ROSE PARK, 6801 Cody Dr, West Des Moines, IA 50266

Features: Older and younger child play structures, basketball court, restrooms, open field

What my kids love: Of course my kiddos love playing on the equipment, but they love running in the huge, open field! I love when they do, too. Who doesn't want to wear the kids out?! ;)

What I love: I love how this park is nestled in a neighborhood and  because of this there's never heavy traffic and the park is never busy. The picnic tables are super close to equipment so it's easy to keep an eye on your children.

Location: QUAIL COVE PARK, 5126 Oakwood Ln, West Des Moines, IA 50265

Features: Two separate play structures, covered shelter area, water fountain

What my kids love: My kids love to call this the "Lion King Park'. There's a huge faux rock for the children to climb on and they love to pretend it's Pride Rock from the Lion King movie. :)

What I love: I love how this park is hidden and tucked away in the forest area. We've even come across deer many times!

That’s my family’s list, but I bet your family has their own favorite WDM picnic spots! I’d love to know where they are. Drop me a line on Facebook or email me at nicolel@macaronikid.com.

Have a great time on your picnic adventure and remember...don’t forget the napkins!
